From Leipzig to Vienna
Terhi Paldanius, violin, and Tiina Karakorpi, piano, perform the violin sonatas by Amanda Maier and Erich Korngold in their matinee. The Swedish-born Maier was one of the closest friends of Johannes Brahms. She was a talented violinist and pianist, and Brahms was happy to play his compositions at home with her. These days, Amand Maier’s music can be heard in concerts. The violin sonata is one of her greatest works. Erich Korngold was a child prodigy who composed his magnificent, passionate and extremely demanding violin sonata when he was only 15 years old. He fled from the persecution of Jews in Europe to America and became known as a film composer. His opera Die tote Stadt has been performed by the Finnish National Opera.
